A robot is a computer-controlled device that can move about and carry out tasks:
  • they take in information from their surrounding using sensors;
  • they are programmed to respond automatically by moving or acting, usually using electrical motors.
There are lots of different robots that come in different shapes and sizes. Although some use artificial intelligence to behave like living creatures on their own, most are used in industry to carry out specific tasks over and over again.

Examples of Robots

Task Reason Robots are Used
Robot buggies are used to defuse bombs. They can carry out tasks too dangerous for people.
Robots on a car production line weld parts together or spray paint onto the bodywork all day long. They donít get bored or tired by repetitive tasks.
In hospitals, robots sometimes help perform surgery during operations. They can make much more accurate movements than humans can.
