| Playing Sounds Stored on a Computer |
You can find lots of sounds on a computer to listen to, such as on a CD-ROM about the orchestra or on a website where you can download popular songs.
There are also programs that let you play virtual instruments on the computer.

This is usually used to record sound onto the computer from a microphone. This could either be somebody talking or a sound from outside – like a thunderstorm.
A sound recording program usually has the following features:

Starts recording sound using a microphone attached to the computer. |

Stops recording or playing sound. |
| Play |
Lets you play back the sound if you have speakers attached to the computer. |
| Pause |
Temporarily stops the playback of the sound. |
Sound recorded in this way is usually saved as a .wav file type. You can easily then import this into other software – like to add narration to a multimedia presentation.
