Playing Sounds Stored on a Computer

You can find lots of sounds on a computer to listen to, such as on a CD-ROM about the orchestra or on a website where you can download popular songs.

There are also programs that let you play virtual instruments on the computer.

Sound Recording Software

This is usually used to record sound onto the computer from a microphone. This could either be somebody talking or a sound from outside like a thunderstorm.

A sound recording program usually has the following features:

Record Starts recording sound using a microphone attached to the computer.
Stop Stops recording or playing sound.
Play Lets you play back the sound if you have speakers attached to the computer.
Pause Temporarily stops the playback of the sound.

Sound recorded in this way is usually saved as a .wav file type. You can easily then import this into other software like to add narration to a multimedia presentation.
