Some music composition programs have icons to represent different musical phrases.

It is easy to compose a tune in this way because the pictures are easy to remember and you don’t have to play any instruments yourself.
You can usually manipulate or change your tune:
| Loop | The tune will be played repeatedly until stop is pressed. |
| Change Tempo | The higher the tempo, the faster the tune will play and the ‘squeakier’ it will be. |
| Change Instrument | You can make the tune sound different by changing the instrument the computer plays it with. For example, you may want to listen to it on a violin, trumpet or xylophone! |
